Beeldend kunstenares Alexandra Engelfriet werkt in de natuur met de materialen die zij daar vindt en met de krachten van de natuur op die plek. Sinds drie jaar is zij gefascineerd door de bodem van de Waddenzee. In de zes uur dat het wad droog staat, maakt zij haar reusachtige sporenbeelden die, als het tij keert, door de zee opgeslokt worden.

Sinds drie jaar is zij gefascineerd door de bodem van de Waddenzee. In de zes uur dat het wad droog staat, maakt zij haar reusachtige sporenbeelden die, als het tij keert, door de zee opgeslokt worden.
Sporen in het Wad volgt het ontstaan en de verdwijning van haar werk op twee zeer verschillende plaatsen in het wad. Bij Ameland bestaat de bodem uit hard zand, er is een schep en noeste arbeid nodig om het beeld te maken. De bodem van de Dollard bij Groningen wordt gevormd door zacht slik. Wie hier zijn sporen wil achterlaten moet er voor zorgen niet in de blubber vastgezogen te worden. De weidsheid van het wad, het licht, de lucht en de vogels vormen op beide plekken een wezenlijk element van haar werk en van de film.

The artist Alexandra Engelfriet works out in nature, using the materials and the natural forces she finds on the spot. For the past three years she has been fascinated by the bed of the Waddenzee. In the six hours that the flats are exposed she makes vast sculptures. Which, when the tide turns, are then swallowed up by the sea.

Tracks in the Flats follows the creation and disappearance of her work in two very different parts of the Waddenzee. To mould the hard sand off Ameland, a spade and dogged labour are required. At Dollard, near Groningen, the seabed is soft silt. To leave your tracks here, you must guard against getting stuck in the mud.
